Mislabeled Seafood: A Common Problem
The list of reasons to buy your seafood from a trusted source is long, and getting longer. In 2013 Oceana released a report that included 1,200 seafood samples from 674 retail outlets, in 21 states. The results were concerning. A full 33% of samples were mislabeled, most commonly snapper (87%) and tuna (59%). Only 7 of the 120 samples of snapper were actually snapper! 7!? Los Angeles fared the worst with 55% of samples mislabeled. Boston came in at 48% and Miami 31%.
